Mixing Complex Greens: Dulling (Video)

Dulling: reducing the vibrancy of a color by adding its compliment. For example, adding a little bit of red to a bright green in order to tone it down, make it more complex. If you add too much of the complimentary color, you will end up with brown. But along the way there are many complex, earthy, subtle shades to be discovered. Dulling is an important color mixing technique for painting organic subjects.
