Materials:

All materials are included. You will receive enough colored felt for some trial exercises and a final project.
You should bring a notebook/ sketchbook for taking notes and sketching ideas.

What to Expect:

During the Painting with Felt workshop you will explore how to create images and objects using wool as your medium. Working with wet felting and needle felting techniques, you will learn how water, soap, heat, and friction transform loose fibers into fabric.

Gain an introduction to the history and properties of felt, and discover how artists use this versatile material in both two-dimensional and sculptural forms. Through demonstrations and guided exercises, you will experiment with layering, fading, collage, inserts, cut-outs, line work, and surface texture.

The workshop combines structured instruction with space for exploration. After learning the fundamentals, you will develop your own personal project with individual guidance, creating a finished piece to take home.

Day 1: Felting Basics

Introduction to felt and its historical uses
Overview of materials and artistic examples
Demonstration of the wet felting process
Step-by-step participatory tutorial
Experiment with techniques including layering, fading, collage, inserts, cut-outs, and needle felting
Brainstorm and begin developing your personal project

Day 2: Developing Your Project

Present your project idea and receive feedback
Set up your individual workspace
Create your own felt artwork using wet felting and needle felting methods
Individual tutoring and technical support throughout
Group sharing and discussion of results

You Will Learn:

Wet felting and needle felting techniques
How natural fibers transform through physical processes
How to create both illustrative and abstract felt works
How to develop a personal project using fiber as a medium

About Your Instructor:

Melissa Antier is an artist of Mexican and Réunionese origin working with painting, performance, and textiles. She grew up in Mexico and studied in France, completing a Bachelor’s degree at EESI and a Master’s degree in Fine Arts at ENSAPC. Her work draws on popular culture, everyday life, language, and DIY approaches. Using bold colour, she reworks familiar domestic gestures into playful, sometimes surreal forms.

Her work has been shown during Mexico City Art Week and at 100% L’Expo in Paris, and she received the ACME x Red Line x Biennial of the Americas Residency Award. For the past two years, she has led felting workshops in self-organised spaces in different countries. She has worked with wool for over five years, creating felt sculptures and installations, and runs her own project, Filzlicht, producing lampshades and wool accessories.
