Workshop Description:

Learn how to paint a still life with acrylic paint. Painting from life is the best way to learn how to use color, light and composition within a painting. Each class will take inspiration from a still life from art history, as we discover how artists have created masterpieces inspired by a simple bowl of fruit or a flower in a vase. Working from direct observation, we will gain a solid foundation in painting that can be applied to many subjects. We will also discuss the symbolism behind the inanimate objects in the painting and how artists create meaning even from everyday still life arrangements.

Still life painting is a genre of great historical importance across many art movements and is still relevant today. Still life painting usually features organic objects and household items as symbolic subjects to convey meaning and narratives.

What we focus on:

  • Understanding basic drawing of objects in terms of their forms, underlying shape structures, textures, and proportion.
  • Learning how to paint dimensional objects; understanding anatomy lights & shadow, and value.
  • Understanding color theory and practicing mixing color.
  • Learning and practicing brush works, and techniques with acrylic paint.

  • Provided: Acrylic paint and basic painting set up.
  • Bring: Sketchbook for taking notes, testing colors, diagraming compositions, etc… Pencil and eraser.
  • To be purchased by the studentEverything for the first class is provided and we will go over additional supplies in detail. Own set of brushes. Own mixed-media paper block or canvas boards (your choice).
  • Recommended: Own set of acrylic paint so that you can practice at home.

Can I participate as a complete beginner?

About Your Instructor:

Manita Kaewsomnuk is a Thai visual artist currently based in Berlin. Having been born and raised in a family of artist, drawing and painting naturally became her main passion. She earned her M.A. from Thammasart University, Bangkok and her B.A. from Silpakorn University, Thailand, with a degree in Visual Communication Design. In her practice she focuses on the female figure as a primary subject in order to reflect various aspects of the human experience. The human body is key to her investigation of humanity, while cultural contexts provide another important source of motivation. She also incorporates symbolic objects in her work. Painting and drawing are generally her preferred mediums, also she is increasingly experimenting with diverse methods, such as sculpture, paper collage, printmaking and photography.

Manita’s artwork has been shown in solo and group exhibitions in Thailand and Germany  since 2018.
