Workshop Description:

Learn to paint directly from life with acrylics, inspired by art history and your own personal style. In this workshop, we’ll explore how working from real-life subjects—whether a bowl of fruit, an inflatable donut, or even a live model—is one of the best ways to sharpen your painting skills and develop your creative voice.

You’ll learn how to capture volume, light, color, and texture in a way that feels both technical and expressive. We’ll observe how water and glass behave under light, how shadows shape the volume of a piece of fruit, and how gesture and presence can also be translated when painting the human figure. These everyday subjects (and occasional live sittings) offer poetic and symbolic possibilities while helping you practice core techniques.

Each class will draw inspiration from different art movements—Impressionism, Cubism, Pop Art, and New Figuration—as we experiment with acrylic painting. Through guided exercises and individual feedback, you’ll build both confidence and curiosity, while exploring different styles and approaches.

What we focus on:

Painting from direct observation (objects and model)
Creating depth and realism through light and shadow
Mixing color with intention and emotion
Applying both expressive and traditional brush techniques
Composing compelling arrangements and scenes
Developing your own visual language through practice

This is a hands-on class, where each session includes a demonstration, guided practice, and individual feedback tailored to your level.

Materials:

Provided: All materials provided for the first class. Acrylic paint provided for ALL classes.
Bring: your own Mixed Media Block (A3), a set of brushes for acrylic paint and old clothes or a painting apron. Examples of what to buy shown during the first class.

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is open to all levels. Juancar offers individual feedback and teaches in a way that supports mixed experience levels. Beginners learn foundational techniques, while participants with more experience are encouraged to experiment and explore new approaches.

If you’ve already taken the Intro Painting Workshop or the Creative Painting Workshop, this is the perfect compliment. Foundation techniques will be revisited and built upon. New students and complete beginners are also welcome — especially those curious about learning foundational painting techniques through observation, exploration, and experimentation.

About Your Instructor:

Juan-Carlos Rosa-Casasola (Juancar/he/him) is an artist and instructor based in Berlin. He brings a warm, playful approach that helps students enjoy the creative process, let go of perfectionism, and grow their creative expression with enthusiasm and passion.

Juancar brings technical and conceptual expertise to his workshops and has international experience in transdisciplinary art projects focusing on visibility, diversity, and immersive experiences. He graduated with honors in Fine Arts from the Universitat Politècnica de València, Spain, in 2014 and later specialized in master’s programs in Art Production, Multimedia Art, and Creative Design.
